As the international community vigorously accelerates towards a green future, Africa is meticulously carving its own trajectory. The African Energy Week (AEW 2023), held in the scenic backdrop of Cape Town, became the epicentre of discussions pivotal to the continent’s energy strategies.
1. Africa’s Unique Energy Landscape
The richness of Africa’s energy resources has always been a known fact. From vast oil reserves to abundant mineral wealth, the continent is teeming with potential. Yet, the narrative at AEW 2023 was not just about tapping into these resources, but doing so while considering Africa’s distinct challenges and opportunities. The African Energy Transition is not just about shifting from fossil fuels to renewables but leveraging every resource to ensure economic upliftment and energy security.
While other continents might have the luxury to focus solely on reducing emissions, Africa juggles the immediate need for energy security with long-term sustainability goals. Dr. Ayed Al-Qahtani from OPEC stressed this unique balancing act, advocating for an approach that doesn’t neglect Africa’s immediate development needs.

Contrary to global sentiments, for Africa, the energy discourse isn’t about an “either-or” strategy. Instead, it’s about creating a harmonized energy mix that utilizes both traditional and renewable sources.
Leading the charge for nuclear energy, Dr. Sama Bilbao y León, from the World Nuclear Association, presented an optimistic view of nuclear’s role in the African Energy Transition. While the world debates over the merits and demerits of nuclear power, for Africa, it emerges as a beacon of hope, offering reliability and scalability. Partnering nuclear with renewables could be the solution Africa has been looking for – achieving consistent energy supply while mitigating environmental impacts.
On the other end of the spectrum, Per Magnus Nysveen from Rystad Energy discussed the concept of ‘energy addition’. Highlighting the critical role of renewables, he argued for their integration with traditional energy sources to cater to the diverse needs of the continent, from urban hubs to remote villages.
3. The Moral and Ethical Dimensions of Energy Choices
Beyond the technicalities of energy sources, AEW 2023 also delved into the deeper ethical implications of energy choices. Alex Epstein’s perspective was particularly enlightening in this domain. Advocating for the pragmatic use of fossil fuels, he underscored their historical role in driving prosperity. For Epstein, the African Energy Transition should not dismiss the pivotal role that fossil fuels can play, especially in the immediate future.
Similarly, the session on clean coal steered by Dr. Zwanani Titus Mathe offered insights into how coal, often vilified in global energy discourses, can be a part of Africa’s sustainable future. By leveraging clean coal technologies and innovations, Africa can harness the power of coal without the usual environmental repercussions.
Wrapping up the sentiments at AEW 2023, the conference illuminated Africa’s unique journey in the global energy narrative. Instead of following a prescriptive path laid down by developed nations, Africa is poised to chart its course, embracing an inclusive, multifaceted approach to its energy transition.
